Lesson from Cheri...
The Alpha and The Omega
In Revelation 1:8 Christ is called The Alpha and The Omega. This title occurs four times in the book of Revelation. John said in Revelation, 1:10 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book.”
Think about this: It says One like unto the Son of Man. This is Jesus, the one whom John laid His head in His bosom, but now changed! Now Jesus is covered or vested if you will in total dazzling glory and when John sees Him, he falls at His feet as dead. “I am ALPHA AND OMEGA, the voice said, “The First and THE LAST.”
This symbol appeals to children and grown ups, to the ignorant and the well educated. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek Alphabet. So, translated, it would read – I am A to Z. And as A is the first letter, so Christ is the first, the oldest of all beings. POW! That’s awesome. He lived before the world was. He always lived! In all respects Christ stands before all. He is the greatest and best, the strongest and kindest of all; the First in his claim to our love and obedience; with whom NONE compare. And as Z is the last letter in the Alphabet, so Christ will be the same when the world is put away like a worn-out garment, when the skies are rolled up like a scroll of parchment. “He is from everlasting to everlasting!” He is the last! There is nothing beyond Him, and His resources are not exhaustible.
Alpha and Omega are not only the first and last, they represent all. With twenty-six letters of the alphabet, we can make thousands of what? Words. Whatever word we can spell. Just like that – we have rightly learned to know Christ, we can never be at a loss; because all we could ever want is treasured up in Him. “We are complete in Him, for in Him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Col. 2:3.
When children learn to read, what do they learn first? They learn their ABC’s, first; and until they have learned that, they cannot read one word; because that is the key that unlocks the sense of it all. So, if you and I are ever going to have true spiritual understanding of the Scriptures, we have to first learn the Divine Alphabet – Christ, the Alpha and Omega. This is the key to the whole thing; the door to all saving knowledge. The Jews have the Bible and they read it in their synagogues, but they do not understand it. Do you know why? Because they refuse to “key of knowledge”, the Alpha and Omega. The Bible is sealed to them; the veil is over their hearts, and they cannot unlock the treasures, and they can’t make any meaning out of it.
There was a tree reported to exist somewhere in Tartary, and instead of fruit, this tree supposedly produced precious stones. Its branches glittered with these huge clusters of pearls and diamonds. Now, if this were true and ever discovered, you can bet it wouldn’t be there for long. But maybe this is just a dreamy version of a true fact in natural history.
Did you know that there is a tiny little creature called the “diamond beetle” whose wing cases are incredibly brilliant with sparkle and color and when you see it in the sunshine, it sparkles and looks like emeralds and gold. These insects sometimes will congregate on the acacia tree in such multitudes that its branches seem like they are loaded with a profusion of these gems. But, this fabled tree of Tartery is a wonderful illustration of the Bible. Because its leaves are like clusters of well-chosen words that are descriptive of Christ; “the lovely chief of all our joys” Words that resemble precious stones and sparkling diamonds, all reflecting the glory of the Sun of Righteousness.
May you be blessed by the truths of God's Word and challenged by the depth of it's meaning.
If Jesus comes today beloved, I'll see you over there in New Jersualem!
